- This is a simple tip for Mac users. New Macs ship with a clean desktop, meaning you won't see icons for the computer's main drive, external drives plugged into the USB port, or network drives.
- If your external hard drive icon is not appearing on your desktop you can easily retrieve via the Finder Preferences. Click on your desktop or the Finder icon in your dock to bring the Finder to the front of your screen. Go to Finder Preferences (Command +,) in the menu bar and select the General tab.

Yes, you can. And this tip will work for any external hard drive, not just for Time Machine volumes.
And in fairness, the default behavior for this is to have drive icons turned off, so I expect that if you're seeing them, you've changed things yourself — or used a utility to do so. You may have forgotten, but it's easy enough to change back.
Please note that this won't prevent the hard drive from being mounted, of course. If you open a Finder window and take a look in the sidebar, you should see the hard drive listed among the 'Devices* connected to your Mac.
You can open it from there if you need to find its contents. It'll also be accessible from any Open command in any application. But at least this way, you can keep the hard drive from cluttering up your otherwise clean desktop space.
How to make hard drives disappear from the desktop
- Open the Finder.
- Click on the Finder menu.
- Select Preferences.
- Under Show these items on the desktop, uncheck Hard disks.
The hard disk icon corresponding to your Time Machine backup will no longer appear on the desktop. Nor will any other mounted hard drive. You can do the same for CDs, DVDs and servers too, or for other external disks.

[Update:Check out the new OWC icons here!]
Recently, OWC Chris S. demonstrated how to create custom Mac icons for use with folders and apps among other things. However, if you’re looking for pre-made icons from OWC, we have you covered.
Mac Os X Folder Icons
OWC ships all of its drives with a custom drive icon to help differentiate it from your other FireWire and USB devices. But when you reformat your drive, you’ll lose the icon along with it and you’ll be left only with the generic orange FireWire or USB icon for your drive.
If you have reformatted your drive and would like access to the drive icon (or some of the other custom icons we’ve created), simply head to our Custom Hard Drive Icons page to download them now.
Once you’ve downloaded OWC’s custom hard drive icons, just follow this step-by-step guide to changing your drive’s current icon. (Note: This tip is compatible with macOS Sierra!)
1) Begin by clicking on your chosen icon and selecting “Get Info” from the File menu (Or, press Command-I). That will bring up a window that looks like this (some dropdown menus may be open, in our image they are all collapsed).
2) Then, click on the picture in the top left corner and press Command-C – or pull down the Edit menu and select “Copy” to copy the hard drive icon.
3) Perform the same “Get Info” (Command-I) on your drive you wish to paste the icon onto.
4) Click on the picture in the top left corner and press Command-V – or pull down the Edit menu and select “Paste” to paste the new icon onto your hard drive.
5) Your drive is ready to go!

Apple’s macOS and Windows have always had the same relationship as Android and iOS. In both markets, Apple’s offering is considered to be more secure and locked down. In both markets, it is also way behind in terms of market share. What is not debatable though is the aesthetics of Apple’s operating systems. Whether it is macOS or iOS, even users who didn’t choose to go the Apple way are fascinated by just how nice macOS or iOS look. You can download the macOS cursors for Windows 10 from below and learn to install and apply them on your PC.
This is why you’ll find a ton of different themes and hacks to make Windows look like macOS. Apple’s focus on aesthetics is undeniable but it’s not for everyone. Prices do play an important role but there are other factors as well that make some people prefer Windows. Gaming is one of them, for example. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t still secretly desire a Mac for its looks. If you do, there are many themes, icons, etc. that can help you emulate the look. It will still be windows and never really look the part but it’s worth trying.
An important aspect of making Windows look like macOS would be the cursors. Windows cursors are quite flat and boring while mac cursors are prettier and more animated. The cursors on both operating systems quite clearly define them. If you like the way the cursors look and behave on a Mac, you can get those Mac cursors on Windows. By using these 8 Windows 10 mouse tricks you can increase your productivity further.
